Zip Files and Downloads
Roman God
Not quite what I had in mind.....
Most of the programs you can get here on my web site are in the form of *.zip files. This means they have been compressed to make moving them around faster and more convenient. It also means that you will need suitable software installed on your system so that you can unzip them. To download means to transfer a file from here (or any other site on the Net) to your system, usually on to your hard drive.
You simply click the next to the file name (see 3.)
If you do not already have an unzipper program, follow the steps below. Note that Windows XP has one built-in.
1. Minimise this page and make a new folder in your C: drive, called something like C:\Temp or C:\Downloads.
2. Re-size the page and click here : On the download page, click the
at
#17. For this, a
different form of zipping has been used. It is known as a
self-extracting
.exe file, and does not need extra software to run.
Such files have a pink download icon.
3. A dialogue box will come up, asking you what you want to do. Choose 'save to disk' and specify the folder you made earlier. With a fast modem it will take around 8 minutes to complete.
4. Having downloaded BKZip.exe, clicking on it will cause it to expand. You should see a dark red background. Just follow the instruction screens. By default it will install into a folder called C:\BKZip. 'Browse' will enable you to change this if you want.
5. It should appear on the right mouse-click context menu (the drop down menu that appears when you right click on a file or folder).
6. Now double click on any .zip file you have downloaded to your machine. It should automatically run BKZip. In the window which appears there should be an .exe file. Click that and your program will be installed.
